PLANS to turn redundant farm buildings near Hay-on-Wye to holiday lets have been met with resistance from local councillors.

A planning application was submitted to Brecon Beacons National Park Authority for the barns at Little Farm in Llanigon, a village near the border town.

Applicant H Bevan wanted to turn the redundant buildings into three holiday lets, including an appropriate change of use.

Consultants for the scheme said Mr Bevan wanted to preserve the character of the site, between the village and Hay Bluff.

They said: "They wish to enhance the character and appearance of Little Farm by transforming the cottage into a rewarding and sustainable holiday cottage by forming a link through to the attached long barn building."

Llanigon Community Council told the authority that it had no objection to the conversions, but wanted the development to be for rental for local people.

"There is a shortage of rental property within Llanigon Parish and surrounding area, local people of all income levels should not be forced away due to lack of housing opportunities," clerk Rosemary Vaughan said.

To create the holiday lets, a building within a building would be built in the Dutch barn to leave the main structure undisturbed.

Consultants said brick and stone work of "Little Barn" was in good condition and conversion would be "simple", while the cottage would be "sensitively repaired" with the same materials.
