A CHARITY cricket match which over the years has raised more than £10,000 for St Michael’s Hospice returns this weekend.

The eighth Richard Matravers Memorial Charity Cricket Match takes place at Wyeside off Broomy Hill in Hereford this Sunday (August 15).

Last year's Covid-enforced postponement of the annual charity event means that enthusiasm amongst those taking part at fever pitch ahead of Sunday's showcase match.

"We really missed playing last year, so everyone’s relishing this match," said Adam Matravers, who captains a side which takes on a team led by his brother, Rob.

"It’s always a great occasion and we’re sure this year will be no different."

The matches began in 2012 in memory of Adam and Rob’s cricket-mad father, Richard, who died at St Michael’s in 2001.

The brothers had always talked about raising funds for the Hospice so they brought together their friends to form two sides - with a brother captaining each team.

Their fundraising took on even greater significance in 2017 when Adam and Rob’s mum, Mim, also died at the Hospice in Bartestree.

"St Michael’s is a place very close to our hearts, and it means so much to me and Rob to raise money for them," added Adam.

Each team features a mix of regular and non-regular players to make the match both interesting and unpredictable.

After the match there is a raffle and auction, with funds going to St Michael’s.

Any businesses wishing to donate items can do so by emailing Adam on adamamatravers@yahoo.co.uk

The match begins at 1pm. All welcome.
