A KINGTON Select Xl played a Burgoyne Select Xl in a one-off cricket match organised to celebrate the life of club stalwart Peter Burgoyne.

Peter was a former Kington Cricket Club player, captain and chairman and was president when he passed away.

The Burgoyne Select Xl ran out winners beating Kington in front of a large crowd on the Recreation Ground with Burgoyne captain Richard Williams stumping Kington captain Duncan Morgan to win the game.

Afterwards Kington Cricket Club president Dr Philip Cleland, chairman Jim Lewis and club supporter and Burgoyne captain Richard Williams, who is also a friend of Peter’s, paid tribute to him in front of a large gathering of family and friends.

For almost half a century, Peter was a mainstay of the marquee and haulage enterprise Burgoynes launched by his grandfather, William Henry Burgoyne, in 1909.

At Luctonians Rugby Club, where he was one of the few honoured with life membership, Peter, a former club president, chairman and treasurer, was described as a “real club legend”.

As a player for Luctonians – he once captained the Second XV and featured in the First XV – he was fondly nicknamed by friends as the ‘Marquee of Lyonshall’.
