A LEISURE centre in Herefordshire is closed until September due to 'flash flooding' earlier this week.

The Bromyard Centre had only been open days after the completion of repairs to its roof before the localised flooding hit the building.

"Findings from initial investigations recommend that the facility remains closed during August to allow the building to fully dry out, the electrics to be repaired and for us to address the root of the problem," said the Bromyard Centre in a statement.

"The team has worked so very hard to get the Centre reopened and share your disappointment and frustration that freak weather conditions have forced its closure.

"We feel very unlucky that another flood (which is completely separate to the previous flooding issue) has stopped the Centre from supporting local people to be more active more often."

The Bromyard Centre was closed for more than a year after closing in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But while other leisure centres reopened, the Bromyard Halo site was kept closed due to ongoing work to repair damage to the roof.

Herefordshire Council, which owns the Cruxwell Street building, said internal damage was caused by "severe and deliberate damage" caused to the roof by vandals.

The repair work had been completed and the centre re-opened days before the flooding this week.

While the Bromyard Centre is closed operators Halo are offering members free gym, swim and group exercise classes at any Halo site in Herefordshire until the Bromyard Centre reopens.

"There is nothing you need to do other than pre-book your activities and the easiest way to do this is via the Halo Leisure app and then search for the name of the Halo centre you are using," added the statement.
