AS TORRENTIAL rain was battering one part of Herefordshire, firefighters were out tackling a large grass fire in another.

Six Herefordshire fire crews from Leominster, Peterchurch, Kingsland, Leintwardine, and Presteigne fire stations were joined by one crew from Wales at the scene of the fire in north Herefordshire just after 6pm last night (July 26).

A spokesperson for Kington Fire Station said crews spent a long evening fighting a field fire involving around three hectares of stubble, bales, and a huge pile of timber and tree stumps near Lyonshall.

"Hard to believe our colleagues at Bromyard Fire Station were dealing with torrential rain and floods... we would have appreciated some of that," they said.

In Bromyard, the scene could not have been more different as heavy rain and hail caused flash floods in the town centre, with muddy water pouring down streets.

Bromyard's newly reopened leisure centre fell victim to the downpour, with firefighters called out as water poured through the recently repaired roof.

A spokesperson for the centre said it would remain closed today (July 27).
