CLEE Hill Rugby Club hopes to build on the success of the ‘amazing’ visit of two England stars by holding a taster session to help more girls to get involved in the game.

The coaching class will be held at the Tenbury Road ground this Sunday from 10-11.30am – and will be run by Worcester Warriors director of women’s rugby Jo Yapp.

She recently organised a visit of England and Worcester duo Lydia Thompson and Alex Matthews to the club’s mini rugby section – and they proved a massive hit.

Yapp said: “It was amazing for all the children to have role models like that come in – it was inspiring, especially for the girls who don’t get to see as many role models as the boys maybe have access to.”

Both players won a bronze medal with the England sevens rugby team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games – and Matthews has also been selected for the Great Britain squad competing at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

Yapp herself is a former England international and captain who was capped 70 times by her country and played in three World Cups.

She took over as director of rugby at Premier 15s side Worcester – her first club – in 2019 and also helped to set up the mini section at Clee Hill, having grown up in the area and now living there again.

“We are very fortunate to have so much support from volunteers and that is so important for these type of initiatives to be successful,” said Yapp, who is supported by Emma Morris with the coaching.

Clee Hill’s mini section already has more than 100 children signed up but the club is keen to recruit more girls that would be starting school years 7 and 8 from September.

They plan to enter a girls’ only team into a competitive league but stress that no experience of playing the game is necessary.

This weekend’s girls camp is for youngsters currently in years 5, 6 and 7 at school, although all age groups will start back training on the first Sunday in September.
