A DRUNK man's friend called police after he drove to their home while intoxicated.

Samuel James Reynolds entered a guilty plea when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Police were called to reports that Reynolds had been driving his Audi A3 while intoxicated in Leominster's Caswell Road at 1.40am on May 23.

Officers arrived and approached Reynolds, who was slurring his words and unsteady on his feet.

Reynolds was arrested and taken into custody after failing a roadside breath test, where an evidential test revealed he had 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

In interview, Reynolds said he had driven to Leominster from his home but could not remember how long he had been there due to his intoxication.

Marilena Di Vitantonio, for Reynolds, said the 28-year-old had been at home with no intention of driving, but that he got behind the wheel after receiving a concerning call from a friend.

"His friend then called police, knowing he had been drinking," she said.

"He knows he should not have done it, but says he had to check in the circumstances. He does not want to air those circumstances in open court, but they do not amount to a defence."

Reynolds, of Little Furlongs, Orleton, was disqualified from driving for three years and fined £346. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £35 victim surcharge.
