A TEENAGER crashed while attempting to flee police after a trip to the pub.

Zachary Kieran James admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and driving without a licence, insurance, or MOT when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

James was driving through Ledbury on his way home from meeting friends at The Trumpet when he was spotted by police at 12.40am on May 20, prosecutor Ralph Robyns Landricombe said.

Officers decided to follow him as he drove onto the A417 turning their blue lights on as he headed towards the M50.

But James sped up in an attempt to evade police, hitting speeds of 90 miles per hour in wet conditions and overtaking a lorry on a bend before losing control and crashing into a field.

In police interview, James said the car was registered to his father, who he had not been in contact with for two years, and he knew it did not have insurance or an MOT.

He told officers he had panicked when he saw police turn their lights on and admitted his driving fell below standards and his actions had been idiotic.

Marilena Di Vitantonio, for James, said the 19-year-old had been very frank in interview.

"He is a young man with no previous convictions," she said.

"He is young and naive and did not appreciate the seriousness of the offence."

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be carried out.
