IT IS the end of an era for one Herefordshire village after a long-closed pub was demolished.

The Kites Nest in Swainshill, near Hereford, had long-since ceased operating as a pub, becoming Indian restaurant Basmati, and later Zaytoon, before shutting down for good some years ago.

But now the former pub is gone, set to be replaced by housing as the builders move in two years after planning permission to demolish the pub and build two new homes on the site was granted by Herefordshire Council in December 2018.

And members of our We Grew Up in Hereford Facebook Group have been sharing their memories of the former pub and their disappointment at its loss.

"I remember going in there while I was at school (I wasn't drinking). I was seen by someone who reported me to the headmistress and was called into her office for a telling off," said Val Edmunds.

Gareth Smith remembered being taken to the pub for chicken and chips by his brother Barry and his wife Carol. "It was a lovely pub to go too, as was the Lord Nelson. Miss those days," Gareth said.

Matt Lewis was another to share his memories, writing: "I drank too much rough cider in there one night and a local challenged me to eat three pickled eggs.

"Safe to say I wasn’t popular with the other half when we got home!"

And Tarquin Evans, whose parents Val and David were landlords at the pub during the 1980s and 90s said he was sad to see it go.

"Lovely memories of that place," he wrote.
