THE HIGH street in Leominster will be closed for four days next week, coinciding with non-essential shop opening their doors for the first time in more than three months.

The decision by Western Power Distribution to close High Street for four days from April 12 has been described as a "nightmare for retailers", with many planning to open their doors for the first time this year as the coronavirus lockdown in England eases again.

Jan Lockett, who lives in the town, said the town council should be pushing Western Power Distribution to move the works to give retailers a chance.

"I think it’s a nightmare for retailers," Ms Lockett said.

"I feel so sorry for traders and businesses. Some of them haven’t earned a penny in 12 months and this is their best chance

"Western Power are digging the road up to put electricity into a renovated flat. If Leominster Town Council have got any gumption about them, they should ask can we move them back?

"I feel so sorry for the retailers, they’re so bored at home, love their businesses and now they got this. This could have been done previously."

Herefordshire Council's online roadworks map says High Street will be closed from Victoria Street to Corn Street as safe access required for Western Power to carry out new electrical supply works.

Western Power Distribution said pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, and a spokesperson for Leominster Town Council said the decision was not made by them.

The spokesperson for Western Power said they apologise for any inconvenience, but the roads needs to be closed as it's too narrow for work to take place while cars are using the road.

Non-essential retail shops have been unable to open their doors in Herefordshire in 2021, except for click-and-collect, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

According to the Government's roadmap, these shops should be able to open from April 12, along with hairdressers and outdoor hospitality.
