HEREFORDSHIRE Council says it will decide whether it flies the Union flag on civic buildings every day when the new guidance comes into effect this summer.

The UK Government has set out new guidance which says the national flag is to be flown on its buildings every day in a bid to unite the nation.

At present, Union flag are only required to be flown on Government buildings on designated days.

But the new guidance from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport will ask for it to be flown all the time in England, Scotland and Wales.

Government ministers said the changes would be a “proud reminder of our history and the ties that bind us”.

And Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick has written to all councils in England in a bid to encourage them to fly the flag on their buildings.

The move will also allow dual flagging – where two flags can be flown on one pole.

“I’m calling on all local councils to fly the Union Flag with pride on their buildings every day,” Mr Jenrick said.

“And we’re cutting red tape to allow them to fly their historic county flag at the same time.”

The county council says it will stick to the flying the flag on the designated days for the time being.

“The council will continue to fly the union flag on civic buildings on the designated days determined by government,” a council spokesperson said.

“We will discuss the new government guidance before it comes into effect in the summer.”
