A HEREFORDSHIRE school has submitted plans to expand with a three-storey science block.

John Kyrle High School have submitted plans to Herefordshire Councils for the new building.

The school states that the building is needed to help them expand after a 'rise in pupils due to residential developments in Ross-on-Wye'.

Herefordshire Council are funding this project and previously agreed to proposals for the building costing £2.3 million.

A planning statement from John Kyrle High School said: "This is an area which currently houses a disused long jump with grassed area which is generally undulating in nature so is not currently a usable play area for the school.

"The disused long jump which is currently housed here is not fit for purpose due to the nature of the ground conditions in this location (surface water flooding issues and undulating ground).

"It is therefore felt that if the long jump is re-provided elsewhere on the school site (to help bring this provision back into use) where the ground is more freely draining and of flatter topography then this would improve the sporting provision at the school and therefore the development proposal should be acceptable to Sports England."

Darwin Group Ltd (previously known as Built Offsite Ltd) built a three storey classroom block in 2015 to improve the schools existing facilities.

The building is located to the north of the school site near to where the proposed building is to be located.

The planning statement added that drainage details have also been prepared to ensure that both surface water and foul water are suitably

managed.

The proposed biodiversity enhancements includes bird and bat boxes and wildflower planting.

The planning statement added: "Although no external lights were to be permitted we have included external lights for security purposes which will be fitted to the building, these will be of an ‘eyelid’ style to reduce light spill."

It is not proposed to remove any trees/ hedges for the proposed development.

The consultation start date for the plans was from Tuesday (March 16) and will run until Thursday, April 8 with a target determination date of Monday, May 3.
