THE pubs of Hereford are often a hot topic of conversation as people reminise about growing up in Hereford, such as the bars no longer there or ones where memories were made.

This picture was shared by Lizzie Robinson in our We Grew Up In Hereford Facebook group, which now has more than 9,000 members.

It shows Ray Crown’s birthday celebrations at the Spread Eagle in King Street back in 1989.

She said it turned into a lock-in and all-nighter, and it was daylight when she walked home.

Commenting on the post, Carly Reynolds said: “Love the memories I have from Spread Eagle.

“My dad’s band used to play music gigs there. He’s changed his band names and musicians over the time, but I think it was called Bubba Likes To Get Down.”

Group members recalled how the Spread Eagle was once the go-to pub for students from the technical and sixth form colleges.

Alan Edge said: “After the Spread burnt down, my mate’s brother Mike Esteban ran it for a short while, must have been 1982.

“Pete Esteban and I spent a huge amount of time in there and made it really popular with the sixth form and tech college gang.

“Really happy days. My pool game has never been so good.”

The pub was also renowned for its steaks when Frank Taday was at the helm in the 1970s.

Barbara Carney remembers the pub always being full due to its reputation with steaks, and Dennis Pitt said he thought Hereford United footballers used to eat there before every home game at Edgar Street in the 1960s and 1970s.
