WHETHER it was a quick trip to pick up some groceries, or spotting the store in a 1970s TV drama, many in Hereford will have memories of Meadow Market.

The popular shop, in Withington, near Hereford, and which later became Norman’s, has been a big talking point in our nostalgic We Grew Up In Hereford Facebook group.

Julia Laylock is one group member who used to work at the shop, which was officially opened in 1971 by farmer and television personality Ted Moult.

She said: “I started working there aged 13, through until GP stores took over. I remember the wines and spirits department in the cellar. It flooded in heavy rain.

“The store was hit by ram-raiders on several occasions, and I recall there was even an armed robbery with senior management still in the store. Great staff and a good place to work. Great employment for the villagers of Withington.”

Sharman Wood said the shop was one of the filming locations for 1970s drama Survivors.

Terry Nation’s series, broadcast by the BBC between 1975 to 1977, was set in a post-apocalyptic present-day world ravaged by a devastating plague. Other filming location included Skenfrith and Hope-under-Dinmore.

For others, like Peter Chamberlain, the picture stirred memories of shopping trips. He said it was a “great place to shop” as prices were good with “no frills”.

Barry Hill said he used to shop there, and everything was on pallets.
