MORE than a dozen people were fined for flouting coronavirus rules on New Year's Eve in Herefordshire, West Mercia Police has said.

With Herefordshire moving to Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions on December 31, people cannot meet others from outside their household in most places, making parties and gatherings illegal.

But West Mercia Police fined 18 people at three different parties across the county on New Year's Eve.

Superintendent Edd Williams said: "In Herefordshire we've all had to get used to the rules of three different tiers in just a couple of weeks. That's why we're particularly grateful that the vast majority of people did exactly the right thing and stayed home for New Year's Eve.

"Sadly there were some people who flouted the rules and 18 fixed penalty notices were issued to people at three different gatherings and parties across the county.

"We know it's not the end to 2020 everyone wanted but by following the rules for a bit longer we can hopefully come out the other side of this sooner rather than later."

Ahead of the New Year, the force said the change from Tier 2 to Tier 3 was disappointing, but asled the public to be responsible and mark the end of 2020 in line with the restrictions.

Deputy Chief Constable Julian Moss said on December 30: "As much as many people may want to be out celebrating the end of the year we all need to follow the restrictions a bit longer and have our New Year celebrations the '2020 way' to help us get back to "normal" as soon as possible.

"We are sure that the vast majority of our communities will respect the rules, as they have since March, and we continue to be thankful for their support, community spirit and care for those around them.

"Those that put others at risk of this deadly virus by committing serious breaches, such as organising large gatherings and parties for New Year's Eve, can expect a visit from our officers and a £10,000 fine.

"Each year we have additional resources in place for New Year's Eve to support our communities in enjoying the celebrations safely. In that respect, this year is no different and extra officers will be on patrol throughout the evening and early hours."

Police did not say where the gatherings took place, who was fined or how much.

Tier 3 rules stop people socialising with others outside their household or support bubble, except up to six people in public spaces.

Pubs, bars and restaurants have also had to close, except for takeaways, and large events cannot go ahead.
