FIVE people from Herefordshire have been recognised in the New Year Honours List, including a college head.
Ian Fryer Peake, former principal and chief executive of Herefordshire and Ludlow College, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education
He was at the helm of the college, formerly Hereford Technical College, for 17 years.
He retired earlier this year when David Williams took over.
There's also an MBE for George Arthur Somers Hervey-Bathurst.
Founder of the Ben Bathurst Memorial Trust, based in Eastnor, near Ledbury, he has been recognised for voluntary service to armed forces personnel and to their families.
Mr Hervey-Bathurst, of Ledbury, set up the charity in 2009 to help sick and injured serving members of the armed forces.
David Fraser Owen has also been made an MBE for services to scouting. Mr Owen has served as chairman of the South Marches District Scout Council.
In the New Year Honours List, published last night (Wednesday), Catherine Jean Lindesay is made a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire for services to the community in Clifford, near Hay-on-Wye.
Also being made an BEM is Hugh Maclean Vernon for services to the Eardisland community.
Dozens of people coming up with solutions to the myriad of problems created by the coronavirus pandemic have been recognised in the list.
Professor Wendy Bickmore head the University of Edinburgh's MRC Human Genetics Unit was honoured for the centre's work identifying genes that put some people at greater risk of developing the most serious symptoms of Covid-19.
She was made a CBE for services to biomedical sciences and to women in science.
