THE organiser of an illegal rave on the Herefordshire border has been fined £10,000, West Mercia Police said.

Officers received reports of up to 50 people at the mass gathering in the West Of England Quarry car park on the Malvern Hills, which is against the law during the coronavirus pandemic.

Police told ravers to leave and the organiser, who has not been named, was fined £10,000.

South Worcestershire Safer Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Gareth Morgan, said: “I’ve been really pleased with the co-operation and understanding we’ve had from members of our community in relation to the Covid-19 regulations so far and it is disappointing we have had to attend such a gathering and issue a fine to the organiser.

“The restrictions that have been placed on us have meant it has been a difficult year for everyone in particular the strain of changed plans for many at Christmas.”

He continued: “We want everyone to be able to enjoy the festive season, but please do so safely and within the regulations.

“It is now as important as ever we all do our bit to stay safe and protect ourselves, our family and our friends.”

The rave, on December 20, took place in the Malvern Hills council area which was in Tier 2 at the time.

Large gatherings are banned under the coronavirus regulations, with gatherings of more than six outdoors in Tier 2 areas only permitted to limited reasons.

These include work and education, as well as weddings and funerals.
