A FATHER from Kington feels he needs to other people less fortunate than himself over the festive period.

Mike Baker, who runs New2You caravan sales in Eardisley, asked for donations to Birmingham Children's Hospital for his 39th birthday in December.

Father-of-four Mr Baker said he chose this as the cause as one of his daughters, four-year-old Lyla, has a rare brain condition.

"At the minute she's doing everything as normal," he said.

"You wouldn't really notice, apart from her needing a splint when she's walking, everything is good.

"But it's inevitable that one day we're going to have to spend a lot of time there, she's going to have to have a brain operation.

"We know it's inevitable, but we don't know, it could be four or five years, so it's a cause close to our hearts."

After £360 in donations came flooding in, Mr Baker pledged for every £1, he would spend £2 on Christmas presents for struggling families.

He spent more than £700 of his own money on the gifts, saying that the business has had a good year so wanted to give something to families who have struggled during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We've been quite fortunate to have not a bad year of business, none of my family have been massively affected by Covid.

"We've just felt quite lucky, and I don't know what started it off, but we just wanted to give something back where we could."
