ALL three emergency services attended reports of a collapsed railway bridge on Newtown Road yesterday but when they arrived there was no such incident found.

A spokesman for the Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said:"Two crews from Worcester and one from Droitwich were called to a report of a collapsed structure on Newtown Road Worcester at 08.45 yesterday (3 December).

"The incident was reported to involve a vehicle and falling debris from the railway tunnel. Crews were unable to locate a vehicle or any falling debris.

"The road tunnel was inspected by Network Rail representatives who confirmed the structural integrity of the tunnel. Ambulance and police also attended.

"The incident was marked for closure at 09.43."

An eye witness said: "It started about 9am, ambulances, incident response units, fire engines, police cars all came from every direction possible. They all pulled up into Williamson Road and onto Newtown Road, parked in Ron Smiths car park.

"I came out of Lidl just before 9.30 and it was still going on. At one point they closed the road going under the bridge at the bottom of Newtown Road. It looked really serious."
