A WREXHAM teacher will complete a charity challenge in aid of a cause close to his heart.

Due to current coronavirus restrictions, Dyfan Wyn Jarvis will complete his first ever 10k race around his home village of Rhos in aid of McMillan Cancer Support.

Dyfan, who teaches Welsh at Connah’s Quay High School, planned to be running alongside one of his colleagues Dave Morris at the Arley Hall 10k event in Cheshire on October 18 but the current restrictions do not allow him to leave the Wrexham area for that reason.

The duo has already raised almost £1,000 at the time of writing so, to honour their commitment, Dyfan will be running the same distance around his village and recording every mile to thank those generous donors.

Speaking to the Leader, the dad-of-two said: “Next Sunday, I should be running my first ever 10k. This is a charity very close to my heart as my own dad passed away with cancer not so long ago.

“When the lockdown first came into effect in March I got into running which is when I signed up for the 10k. It’s probably going to be a bit more difficult in Rhos as it will be hillier and I’m more used to running on flat surfaces.

“McMillan do some absolutely amazing work and we will be forever grateful to them as a family.”

As well as virtual donations, fellow Connah’s Quay High staff member Anthony Craughwell arranged a school Bake Off for McMillan Cancer Support in memory of his own father which raised hundreds of pounds.

This has been collectively pooled into one batch of fundraising for the charity.
