The most dangerous roads in Warrington for cyclists

According to Crash Map, there have been over 170 cycling accidents in Warrington between 2015-2019- and some roads are more dangerous than others.

Here are the roads and blackspots that Warrington cyclists need to be aware of:

Cycling fatalities in Warrington

According to Crash Map, there haven’t been any cycling fatalities in Warrington between 2015 and 2019.

But in May, a 42-year-old man died following a collision between a Red Ford Tourneo Connect and a blue bicycle at the junction of Dunham Road, Paddock Lane and Warburton Lane.

According to 2018's Pedal Cycling Road Safety Factsheet from the Government’s Department of Transport, 23 per cent of serious and fatal cycling accidents occurred on roundabouts, mini-roundabouts or at crossroads.

This statistic seems to apply to Warrington, as Crash Map shows many cycling accidents occurred on roundabouts.

There have been three ‘slight’ accidents and one serious accident on Cockhedge roundabout between 2015-2019.

Just down the road on the roundabout between Fennel Street and Mersey Street, six ‘slight’ cycling accidents took place.

Another cycling blackspot in Warrington is the junction where Longford Street meets Orford lane- one slight and one serious accident has taken place in the spot.

The junction where Manchester Road meets the A50 is another danger hotspot for cyclists to be aware of; three ‘slight’ accidents were reported here between 2015-2019.

What is being done to keep Warrington cyclists safe?

Joshua Harris, Director of Campaigns at Brake (road safety charity), said cycling is a way to keep active and healthy- and we should be doing all we can to make cycling the safest choice for travel on our roads.

He added: “Two-thirds of adults feel that it is too dangerous to cycle on roads which is unsurprising given the threats cyclists face from fast moving motor traffic and with such limited space for cycling on our roads.

“We need to overcome the barriers which deter people from getting on their bikes. We urgently need more investment in dedicated cycling infrastructure and we need safer vehicle speeds, including 20mph limits in our towns and cities.

“We urge all road users to look out for each other, particularly around known danger spots.”

Earlier this month, Warrington Borough Council submitted a £500,000 bid to the government which will be used to make a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians.

A Warrington Borough Council spokespersons said: “Cycling is an important mode of travel which we know becomes more attractive for many more people when the conditions are right. 

"Cycling safety is at the heart of our future highways planning including our local transport plan LTP4, which includes major investment now and in the future in our cycling infrastructure.”
