A GOOD deed went wrong for a driver who was caught behind the wheel of his brother’s car while over the drug limit.

Daniel Luke Shaw, of High Street, Bromyard, admitted three drug-driving offences when he appeared before magistrates.

The court heard Shaw had been driving on Mill Street in Leominster in the early hours of the morning on March 13 when he was seen by police.

Prosecutor Ralph Robyns Landricombe said officers followed Shaw, who had a front light out, as he headed out of town, catching up with him at the BP garage on the A49 at 1.10 am.

Shaw told police he was taking his brothers car home for him, but was arrested after failing a roadside breath test.

Officers also found a small amount of drugs on the 31-year-old at the police station.

Evidential tests in custody revealed Shaw was under the alcohol limit, but a drug test revealed he had 21 microgrammes of cocaine, 619 microgrammes of cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine, and 2.2 microgrammes of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol per litre of blood. The respective legal limits are 10, 50 and two.

Chris Read, for Shaw, said he had been stopped because his light was out and there was no criticism of his driving.

“He had been out in the Leominster area and he felt he was being responsible in stopping his brother from driving the car by taking it home for him,” he said.

“He had used drugs and thought enough time had elapsed that there would not be an issue, but he had miscalculated.”

Shaw was disqualified from driving for 12 months, fined £80, and must pay costs of £50 and a £34 victim surcharge.
