Campaigners placed banners and flags across a bridge in Llanidloes to raise awareness of Welsh independence.

It was the latest in a series of small demonstrations across Wales by pro-independence group YesCymru after three larger rallies planned to take place this year were cancelled due to the coronavirus.

YesCymru members from Machynlleth, Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells joined supporters in Llanidloes on the A470 bypass bridge on Saturday, August 29.

Nigel Callaghan, YesMachynlleth chairperson, said: "The purpose was to show and make people aware of the campaign and give people a chance to respond. It was incredibly popular with a number of people honking their horns continuously".

Mr Callaghan added that membership has doubled in the Machynlleth area, and tripled across Wales during the lockdown. He said the coronavirus outbreak has helped raise awareness of the Welsh Government's powers.

"It's sinking into the public's consciousness that the Welsh Government can do things better than Westminster and the argument for a lot of people is that Wales is perfectly capable of making its own decisions."

There are seven YesCymru groups based in Powys: Ystradgynlais, Brecon, Welshpool, Machynlleth, Builth Wells, Llanfair Caereinion and Llanfyllin.
