THIS week will see a town centre street in Wrexham close to allow pubs to put out tables and chairs onto the pavement for their customers.

Wrexham Council announced on Thursday that it will be closing the High Street between 6pm and 6am from the Wynnstay to the Old No 7 Bar and Grill, Monday through to Saturday.

It’s a new initiative aimed at supporting the evening economy following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A spokesman for the authority said: "Several traders have applied for a pavement licence to allow them to do this and The Parish, Frisky Pudding, The Bank and Wetherspoons have now all been granted a licence.

"There’ll be a table booking requirement with table service and social distancing in place so you’ll need to check with individual establishments to see what they have in place and to book a table.

"You’ll also have to provide personal contact details in case you need to be contacted should a positive case be recorded in an establishment you’ve recently been to.

"Drinking alcohol in public places in the town centre is prohibited, as part of the Public Space Protection Order, but drinking in licensed premises and within the boundaries of street cafés is allowed.

"Please remember - Covid-19 is still amongst us and we will all need to be vigilant and follow Government guidelines to Keep Wrexham Safe – please be careful and pay particular attention to hand washing and social distancing."

Cllr Terry Evans, lead member for economic development, said: “This is very good news for establishments along High Street and I would like to thank everyone involved.

"I’m sure that it’ll be well received by visitors to Wrexham during the evening. Everyone has worked really hard to put this in place and I hope many of you are able to enjoy the new look High Street safely.”

Access to the St Giles Parish Church and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

The road closure will be in place from Monday to Saturday between 6pm and 6am.
