ONE of the first post-lockdown open air theatre performances is happening in Llandrindod Wells this weekend the Willow Globe Theatre.

The performance, of The Tempest, comes from the Everyman Youth Theatre, which is based in Cardiff.

It will take place on Saturday, August 15, in front of a small audience and adhering to the latest Welsh Government social distancing guidelines.

It sees a return of live theatre to the town for the first time since lockdown came into force in March.

A spokesperson said: “What makes this more special is that they are a group of teenagers who would have performed at the Everyman Festival but this has of course been cancelled.

“As such they thought they would not have a chance to perform this year.

“This on top of many of them now not sitting exams is really affecting their mental health.”

Their director Sarah Bawler has been having zoom drama meetings with them every Sunday and they have been working with the three groups time capsules.

They had decided to carry on rehearsals for The Tempest over Zoom and got to do a live YouTube performance a few weeks ago.

They were contacted by the Willow Globe, an open air venue where they have performed every year, and were asked to come back to perform there with government social distancing measures in place.

A spokesman said: “They have been rehearsing virtually on Zoom and in the park and are so very excited to be doing this performance.

“Even though the Everyman Open Air Theatre isn’t going ahead this year part of it is down to these determined youths.”

“With all the gloom that’s going on we all need news like this to know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel - and it’s the teenagers showing us the way.”
