Bill Wiggin does his democratic credentials no service in suggesting that it is improper for people to continue to express publicly views that are different from those of the elected government.

Around half the electorate did not support this government’s manifesto, and it is to be hoped that he is not suggesting that they should abandon their democratic voice.

Of course people should demonstrate their opinions in opposition to government and suggesting that they should not do so is a dangerous path towards a very different political system.

As to food standards, the proof will be in the pudding.

When we see the outcome of the trade negotiations we shall know whether he or the NFU and a host of other farming, consumer and business organisations were right to be concerned.

Incidentally, Herefordshire for Europe has around 700 members, whereas the average Conservative party membership per constituency is 300.
