A COUPLE who have spent their lives living and working in Hereford have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Margaret Russell and Donald Mawson were both born in the city in 1938 and grew up just a few streets away from each other.

While Margaret grew up in Baysham Street, Donald spent his childhood living around a mile away in Grandstand Road.

Their son Michael said his parents met at the Commercial Road youth club through mutual friends before tying the knot on July 2, 1960.

Michael said his father, known as Don, worked at the Wiggin metal factory in Holmer Road for 37 years while his mother Margaret worked at Bulmers and then Mojo cash and carry.

The couple welcomed two children when Pamela was in 1966 and Michael in 1968. Don and Margaret now have five grandchildren.

“Donald has played skittles for the same team for over 50 years and both were keen walkers and members of several walking groups,” his son added.

“After retirement they enjoyed travel in both the UK and Europe in both motor home and caravan and have been active in the local community helping with meals on wheels and Burghill in Bloom.

“Don has been a keen gardener all his life and Margaret an excellent cook using all the freshly grown vegetables.

“They have been wonderful parents and grandparents and have many friends in Hereford.”
