A man caught on camera dumping wooden pallets and other rubbish from the back of a van in Billingshurst could soon find himself facing legal action.

The fly-tipper struck at around 9.30pm on June 15 in Wooddale Lane – unaware that Horsham District Council had installed a camera on that exact spot.

The council put out an appeal for people to name him – and several did just that.

At a meeting of the full council on Wednesday (July 1), Philip Circus, cabinet member for environment, recycling and waste, said: “We publicised [the footage] on You Tube and I did a radio interview and appealed to the public to be public-spirited and identify the person concerned.

“I’m very glad to say that – as they say in Crimewatch – several people identified the same person.”

Mr Circus said the council was talking to the police and its own legal team with the aim of taking enforcement action.

He added: “I’m very anxious that we as an authority are not just seen to tut-tut at what we see on the television screens but we actually take some meaningful action and get somebody bang to rights for this sort of thing.”
