THERE is currently no date set for when tips in Bromyard and Kington will reopen, with residents facing a 30-mile round trip to another site.

All household recycling centres in the county were closed in March after the Government introduced strict lockdown measures to halt the spread of coronavirus.

Since then, sites at Hereford and Leominster have reopened for "essential use only" with Ross-on-Wye's centre set to reopen tomorrow (Monday).

But for people living in Kington and Bromyard, they have to travel to sites in Hereford or Leominster where the number of cars trying to access the site sometimes causes a two-hour wait.

Helen Pettitt from Bromyard has been unable to go to the tip herself as her husband has been shielding.

Mrs Pettitt, who runs a cafe in the town, said: "We're struggling because we want to do gardening when we're at home because we can't go anywhere, and we have been doing that, but all of our garden waste is just building up and building up.

"We have no way of disposing it whatsoever. If Bromyard tip was open then we have had a couple of people say we would take it for you. But we can't expect them to drive all the way to Hereford or Leominster to get rid of our rubbish – especially with the queues they've had over there.

"It would be great if Bromyard tip reopened as it would help out so many more people here."

Herefordshire Council said sites may be able to reopen "shortly", but more staff are needed than normal

“We anticipate being able to open additional household recycling facilities shortly, but this will need additional staff and resource to be able to operate recycling centres safely with required social distancing measures," a spokesperson said.

"We will confirm details as soon as these arrangements have been made.”
