FLY-TIPPERS who ‘don’t give a damn’ about Warrington need to be named and shamed, says a former deputy council leader.

People were left angry earlier this month after a huge amount of waste was dumped in a part of the town blighted by the problem shortly after a clean-up operation.

Items including a sofa, carpet and bags of rubbish were left off Orford Avenue, close to Orford Lane, as well as around Dorothea Street and Longford Street.

But some of the waste that was blighting the area has now been cleared.

The council’s environment services team made arrangements for rubbish outside a property on Orford Lane to be cleared on Friday.

Cllr Mike Hannon (LAB – Orford), a former deputy council leader, has expressed serious concerns over the situation in the area.

He said: “The fly-tipping in this area has gone on for years, as indeed other hotspots, and I have been pleading with Warrington Borough Council (WBC) to make an example and fine them time and time again in the hope that the message gets home.

“I know the hard work WBC are doing more than ever with the virus but I am not having residents of Warrington suffering health and hygiene problems by the minority who don’t give a damn about their town – and part of me feels guilty highlighting this in these times.

“Enough is enough, let’s name and shame this mindless minority.”

The issue continues to cause concern among senior figures at the Town Hall.

Cllr Tony Higgins (LAB – Fairfield and Howley), cabinet member for leisure and community, said: “Cllr Hannon is quite right to feel frustrated and angry.

“Fly-tipping isn’t just a blight on our community landscape, it drains our overstretched resources and takes away from other vital services.

“This is something the central six delivery board will be focusing on, including on how we can work with residents and other agencies to tackle the issue of fly-tipping.”

Dealing with fly-tipping costs the council around £600,000 a year.
