ON May Day morris dancers are a regular sight as groups celebrating the first day of summer, but with coronavirus lockdown rules in place they have had to adapt the long-standing tradition.

Foxwhelp Morris, based in Moccas, were not able to meet as a group at Arthur's Stone overlooking Herefordshire's Golden Valley. But one member, Scott Larman, still took part in the tradition which started in the 15th century.

"Every May Day we would all assemble at dawn at 5.30am up by Arthur's Stone over looking the Golden Valley and Black Mountains, and 'dance up the sun', which is a long standing morris tradition across the country," he said.

"Naturally with social distancing in place we couldn't do it this year, but we all decided that one of our side, myself, lives close enough.

"It was an easy walk up the hill to perform a solo jig, in full costume, thus preserving the continuation of Foxwhelp 'dancing up the sun' at the site."

Mr Larman continued the spectacle as he performed in his black hat and trousers with bells on his shins, waving handkerchiefs.
