POLICE in Herefordshire are urging people to stay at home and have been busy this weekend as they pull motorists over for a variety of offences.

Officers from the county's operational policing unit arrested one driver for drug-driving on Saturday evening who was said to be making a non-essential journey to visit a friend.

Government advice to people is to not socialise with people outside of their own household to try and stop the spread of coronavirus.

But the West Mercia Police officers said the woman, who was driving from Worcester to Hereford, tested positive for cannabis and cocaine.

A second driver was stopped by police this morning (Sunday).

"No insurance, no tax, no MOT and out to get car parts is not a great excuse to be driving," officers said.

It was followed by a similar incident when a driver was stopped for having no insurance.

Police said it was essential travel as the driver had been grocery shopping, but "hadn't paid for their car insurance".

It comes as officers have been stopping vehicles on two key routes into Hereford recently, with checkpoints set up on the A465 at Belmont and on Aylestone Hill.

Drivers are reminded to only make ‘essential’ journeys, including shopping for basic necessities, trips to pharmacies, to provide care for a vulnerable person or travelling for work.
