A HEREFORDSHIRE MP has rebelled against the government over plans to allow Huawei to be used in the UK’s 5G mobile network.

North Herefordshire MP Bill Wiggin was among the 38 Conservative rebels who backed an amendment to end the Chinese technology company role in the project by the start of 2023.

Despite promises from the government of a new bill to address their concerns, rebel MPs pushed their plan to a vote.

Some Tory critics say the firm is an arm of the Chinese government and a risk to national security. The company rejects this claim.

But with a large Commons majority, the government defeated it by 24 votes.

Hereford and South Herefordshire MP Jesse Norman, who is serving as financial secretary to the Treasury, was one of the 301 Tories who voted with the government.
