A KIND stranger helped a 'distressed' woman to find her way back home after she was punched in the face in Oxford.

Police are trying to track down the mystery Good Samaritan, following the attack in The Leys on Saturday morning.

Officers are not sure exactly where the assault happened, but said it was either Blackbird Leys or Greater Leys.

The woman, 18, was punched by a man at some point between 6am and 9am.

She was hit to the left hand side of her face and suffered bruising and reddening to her eye.

Afterwards she ran from the man and knocked on nearby doors for help.

Police said an 'unknown man intervened' and helped her to get back to her own home elsewhere in Oxford.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Sean Campbell based at St Aldates police station, said: "We would like to speak to anyone who may have information about this incident.

"The woman was very distressed and as this was in daylight hours, it is likely people will have seen this incident and have information about it.

"We would especially like to speak to the man who helped the victim. You are not in trouble but could have vital information that will help."

An Oxford man, aged 22, has been arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released on police bail until March 12.

Anyone who can help can call 101 quoting reference 43200053148, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
