Worcester's air pollution is a concern, even with its bypass.
Hereford will still have traffic jams after a bypass. They would be mostly caused by residents on short journeys.
So let’s test a congestion toll charge like Stockholm on a similar river crossing. In 2007, on its first day it drastically cut unnecessary trips and also won public support.
Unless there is an automated registration camera toll on the Greyfriars Bridge, Herefordshire Council needs those electric buses. At the popular bus stops, even in villages, install live up-to-date digital bus arrival times.
Make no mistake, a new bypass will be a short-term win, especially for manufacturers.
For every new electric car in the UK there are 37 new CO2-emitting sports utility vehicles.
