AS PART of our regular monthly series celebrating Herefordshire's schools, Orleton CE Primary says how pupils have big part to say in the running of the school.

Orleton CE Primary School is set in stunning north Herefordshire between the market towns of Ludlow and Leominster.

Parents choose the school from the local area and many miles beyond. Orleton has single year group classes, which is unusual for a village school.

The school prides itself on the rounded education it provides to its students – one in which they learn to excel as well as become valuable contributors to their local community and the world beyond.

This is achieved through a supportive family atmosphere that fosters individuality and free thinking.

This collaborative and friendly approach clearly works, with children achieving excellent outcomes while enjoying their learning.

Hereford Times:

Orleton educates the whole child, making school a fun place to be.

It has first-class sports coaching and achieves a high level of success, beyond the level normally expected for a school of its size.

The school invests in transport to ensure children can compete regularly in competitive matches, and the children thoroughly enjoy this.

This focus has been recognised by Sports Council England, who awarded their highest accolade, the Sports Mark Platinum. The grounds incorporate sports pitches, a running track, Forest School area and Pyramid outdoor classroom that can be accessed all year round.

Orleton is also one of the co-founders of the newly formed Marches Education Climate Group where ‘eco leads’ in schools are networking to share best practice and problem solve on ways to help the environment.

Music plays a key role in school life. A school band and a very accomplished musical director help to foster a love of singing and performing in the children from the very start of their time at the school.

If you visit the school, you’ll meet Dolly the Dachshund. She’s the school dog with a small stature but a big personality!

The children smile a lot! They say “It’s our school”. And no wonder, because the pupils have a big say in its running.
