RESIDENTS have been left retching after a suspected "sewage leak" on a busy road in York.

Water has covered a stretch of Leeman Road today, under the railway bridge and close to the National Railway Museum.

A team from Yorkshire Water have attended the scene.

And a spokesperson for City of York Council said the road and all drainage gullies will be fully cleaned tomorrow.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said: "We were made aware of sewage in Leeman Road in York late this morning with a team sent to the site as quickly as possible.

“The team jetted a number of sewers in the area and cleared both the private blocked drain and the gulley blockage."

Holgate Ward councillor Kallum Taylor described it as a "sewage leak" on Twitter and posted pictures of the scene.

He told The Press: "Residents were retching this morning having to see, smell, and even walk through a pretty hefty, and growing, foul-water leak from the nearby Siemens site.

"After a lot of scrambling around with calls, emails, tweets, info from residents, and pressure from council staff (who helped stress the urgency to Yorkshire Water) the issue is now being resolved.

"Hopefully it’s been properly fixed, cleaned, and won’t happen again."

Steve Wragg, flood risk manager at City of York Council, said: “We have worked with Yorkshire Water to support their investigations into the cause of the incident.

"Standing water levels have reduced significantly after Yorkshire Water’s visit.

"A full cleanse of the road and all drainage gullies will commence tomorrow morning after the forecasted frost conditions have passed.”

City of York Council has tweeted: "Until @YorkshireWater confirm the situation, please don't touch the water. We're assessing the situation too and will advise as soon as possible."
