FLOOD alerts have been issued across Herefordshire as heavy rain is forecast over the next few days.

Alerts are in force for the rivers Wye, Arrow, Frome, Leadon, and Lugg, meaning that flooding is possible.

A flood warning is in place for the river Teme at Stanford Bridge, near the north Herefordshire-Worcestershire border. It means flooding is expected and immediate action should be taken.

The Environment Agency says it is closely monitoring the situation in Herefordshire, but flooding of low-lying land and roads in several parts of the county is expected.

River levels are expected to remain high until today (Friday), with further rainfall likely to cause levels to rise.

The A4110 was closed yesterday (Thursday) between the B4530 and the A4113 due to flooding near Leintwardine.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service was called to the A4113 at Walford at 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon.

A spokesperson said an adult was in their car in about one foot of water.

It was towed to dry land by a passing 4x4 vehicle.

Yellow weather warnings for rain are in force across the West Midlands and South-West England.

Dave Throup, Environment Agency manager for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said the river Wye is currently very high again.

Although it is peaking this morning at about 4.4m he said it was "important to stress that’s over a metre lower than October".

No significant problems were expected, he said.

The A417 between Bodenham and Hampton Court is currently closed due to flooding, as is Watery Lane in Hereford.

There will be a rainy start to today (Friday), but it will be drier later.

Unsettled conditions are likely to remain through the weekend and into Monday, with blustery showers and strong winds predicted.
