WORKERS have been spotted starting to clear the large build up of debris that accumulated at Hereford's Old Bridge during the recent flooding.

Men in high-vis clothing were seen amid the sea of debris which blocked the middle span of the bridge and forced its closure to pedestrian and vehicle traffic last month.

The Environment Agency confirmed last week that work to remove the debris would begin once the river was at a safe level.

Dave Throup, from the Environment Agency, said: "It’s been a huge job clearing the blockage on Hereford Old Wye Bridge today.

"Boat crews with chainssaws have managed to cut a path through from downstream side.

"We’re taking away as much plastic as we can. Back tomorrow to reduce flood risk to the good folk of Hereford."
