Writer, actor and activist Phoebe Kemp presents May, a celebration of 'the cripple suffragette', May Billinghurst, at The Courtyard on Friday evening.
Produced by Wyldwood Arts, May is a one-woman show based on the life of May Billinghurst, an activist and suffragette who campaigned in a tricycle due to her disability, and whose story has been widely ignored by the history books.
Using original letters and extracts between May Billinghurst, her family, and other suffragettes including Emmeline Pankhurst, May is an exploration of the constricts facing women, the oppression of LGBTQIA+ individuals and the restricted lives of disabled people, in the claustrophobic Edwardian era.
Through the production, Kemp encourages the audience to reflect upon how far we have come as a society in the past 100 years in our fight for equality. Audiences can join Phoebe Kemp for a post-show Q&A.
