Dr. John Whitelegge’s recent letter warning the so-called “Western bypass” will create more traffic is timely.

Without the scheme, those in favour constantly argue that city centre pollution will continue. Have they not taken note of the electric revolution unfolding? Volvo announced they would no longer make diesel engines. Jaguar are building a new factory just for electric cars and the German giants already have “green” vehicles.  So looking to the future rather than replicating the mistakes of the past  -  where will all the pollution be generated?

Those in favour of the scheme can be likened to some Victorians who went on digging canals when railway lines were being laid alongside and not realising how the world has moved on.
