AN ACTION group has launched a petition to save proposals for a Hereford bypass.

The petition by Save Our Bypass has more than 150 backers and calls on Herefordshire Council to stick to the previous administration’s commitments to build the new road.

Council chiefs revealed last week that they have ordered officers to produce reports on the financial implications of stopping major infrastructure schemes such as the proposed bypass and southern link road.

They are yet to make any formal decisions on the future of both schemes, but an announcement is expected soon.

The petition says the bypass would tackle pollution, improve the economy and help reduce traffic congestion.

“The council had at last committed to building a bypass but now we hear that they are considering cancelling the project altogether at a cost of over £10 million to the Hereford taxpayer,” the petition reads.

“Please sign this petition to help show that the ordinary residents of Herefordshire support the bypass.

“It’s not about politics or personality, it’s about doing the right thing for our city and our county.

“We should build the bypass and then focus on promoting alternative forms of transport, the council should deliver for all of its residents not just the vocal minority.”

Kathryn Bentley who signed the Change.org petition said the bypass is needed.

“Medieval layouts may be decorative, but times have changed and a proper bypass is important infrastructure for everyone, especially if you hope to develop housing trade and business for the area.

“The train from Worcester was a nightmare when working in the city, and I was never sure if the roads would be choked either.”

Peter Thomas, another backer, said the city needs an integrated transport system to grow.

“This involves a second bridge and a bypass,” he said.
