History: Andy and Angela started The Coffee Kitchen back in 2011, serving single-estate coffees and making their own bread.

The demand for bread eventually led them to open The Coffee Kitchen Bakery in Market Place in 2015.

A couple of years ago, they started opening on Friday nights serving sourdough-based pizzas and local beers. They also provide outside catering for a range of events from business lunches to weddings.

Style of food: During the daytime, The Coffee Kitchen concentrates on breakfasts, snacks and light lunches.

Menu Sample: The CK Eggs Benedict (otherwise known as ‘The Big One’) is a combination of poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, salted brisket, jalapenos and Cumberland Honey Mustard all served on breakfast muffins from the bakery (£8.50). Smashed avocado on sourdough toast can come with a poached egg or smoked salmon (£5.50 - £7.50). Home cured Cumbrian back bacon and Cumberland sausage sandwiches with a homemade relish, onions and/or brie (£4.50 to £5.50) all served on fresh rolls from the bakery. Waffles are all vegan and gluten-free waffles are available as an option. Each waffle (£3.50) comes with maple sauce but further toppings can be added including smoked streaky bacon and ice cream (£1 each). Additional syrups cost 50p. On Friday evenings, the café hosts a pizza night and features a variety of options from a margarita (£8.50) to a Tarte Flambee with lardons, crème fraiche, onions, garlic and parsley (£11).

Cakes and traybakes are always available.

In their own words: When new first opened, we tried to create a place that we would like to visit ourselves. Eight years on, we still love hanging around the café and we are really touched that other people do too.

We try our best to highlight Cumbrian producers in the food we make. We’re part of the Real Bread Campaign which promotes bread made the old fashioned way without unnecessary ingredients the big bakeries and supermarkets put in their bread.
