An elderly woman was taken to hospital following a house fire in Carlisle.

Firefighters were called to Northwood Crescent, Stanwix, at 3am.

The blaze had broken out in the bedroom of a bungalow.

The bed was on fire when emergency services arrived.

An elderly woman was in the property when fire broke out.

She managed to get out before firefighters arrived.

However she was later taken to hospital as a precaution.

The Carlisle West and Carlisle East fire crews both attended.

They used breathing equipment and a hose reel to extinguish the blaze.

They were at the scene until about 5am.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
