THE slight rain showers did not dampen enthusiasm at the St Mary's CE Primary School in Fownhope sports day.

The afternoon started with a picnic lunch, enjoyed by children with their families, before the races began.

Every child then took part in three races: a sprint, long distance and a class novelty race before the famous 'shuttle relay' when eight children from each class represented their house groups in the final challenge!

Mums, dads and toddlers were not left out and one of the highlights was watching the mums and dads racing with a beanbag between their legs.

"The whole afternoon was great fun and there was a lovely atmosphere," said Emma Mann, parent of two children at the school. "It was lovely to see the children enjoying sport and being so supportive of each other."

Another parent commented how lovely it was to see the girls in Year 6 holding hands and crossing the finishing line together at the end of their long distance race.

"It was a great afternoon," said Mr Milne, head teacher. "Many thanks to parents for their support and to the PTA for providing refreshments. I am so pleased that we were able to finish the races before the rain set in!"

The event was won by Frome House, who were delighted to attach their yellow ribbon to the sports trophy and take it on a lap of honour around the field in front of all the spectators.
