This month's Weirdshire night, the latest in an ongoing series of gigs in the intimate space of Babar Café in Union Street features Howie Reeve.
Howie is a singular figure in the current British underground, performing solo on acoustic bass guitar, delivering a fragmented and dexterous music that takes in post-punk, avant-folk and improv. His songwriting engages audiences with cryptic, intimate and unsettling lyrics. His music sounds like no one else in the world. But if you have ever enjoyed Minutemen, Long Fin Killie, Captain Beefheart, or wondered what Joanna Newsome would sound like if she was punk, and wrote about casual racism and referenced 1970s tv cops, then there’s no doubt you will love Howie.... He released a 7" of bass duets with Minutemen/Stooges legend Mike Watt in 2015.
Resolutely DIY in his approach to music, he lives in Glasgow but appears to be perpetually on tour, whether in the UK, Europe or Japan. He will be playing a few songs from his forthcoming album Cracks and there'll be vinyl selections from Jus Jay and Sproatly Smith.
Free entry, with suggested donation of £8.
