On Saturday, March 9, the Community Hall in New Radnor will resound to the sounds of string ensembles from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

One half of the concert will be from The Royal Welsh Consort of Viols in a set of music from the16th and 17th centuries and including Byrd Ward, Dowland, Corette, Lawes and Elwin Bevin.

The other part of the concert will be a performance of Beethoven’s B-flat trio Opus 11, Mozart's last Piano Sonata K576 and the Prelude of Bach's 5th Cello Suite performed by the Glamorgan Trio.

The Royal Welsh Consort of Viols consists of graduates and present students of the RWCMD who became interested in early music through their cello studies. As well as performances at the College’s own events, members have played at Gloucester Cathedral and France’s biannual Festival d’Asfeld.

The Hiraeth String Quartet formed in September 2018 at the RWCMD. Alongside Masters and Undergraduate studies and their freelance work, the quartet enjoys exploring the chamber repertoire. Recent performances include the Music in the Vale Prizewinners’ showcase after receiving first place in the 2018 chamber group category.

"Staging a student concert for the end of our season has now become a tradition for Music in New Radnor," says Mary Tollhurst for MiNR and we are proud of our links with the Royal Welsh College. These concerts are a marvellous opportunity to see young performers on the brink of their musical careers."

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. To reserve tickets, call 01544 350268; they will also be available on the door.
