CHILDREN at Canon Pyon Academy have a new space to explore the world of books.

Created using a new shed donated to the children by Collins Design and Build, designers and builders of the village's Pyon Close housing development, a new 'Story Shack' has pride of place in Canon Pyon Academy's playground.

The shed has been transformed into a cosy, relaxing space for pupils to quietly read and enjoy books, with books, lights and comfortable chairs for the children donated by parents, and a carpet donated by Hereford Carpets.

Snipping the ribbon at the official opening ceremony for the school's new 'Story Shack' was Pie Corbett, creator of the 'Talk for Writing' approach for learning, which is widely used in primary schools across the UK, and author of over 200 books.

Mr Corbett was accompanied in declaring the reading space open to the excited children by Dave Jones, Construction Manager for Collins Design and Build.

Canon Pyon CE Academy said: "The Story Shack offers the inspiring, engaging and multisensory environment which is essential for teaching a child the foundations of their reading skills, from a first grasp of phonics right through to an in-depth understanding of literary meanings.

"A big thank you to all who have contributed in making this idea a reality."
