Hereford road users had to take their lives in their hands today as traffic lights failed on one of the county council’s flagship highways improvements.

The lights on the City Link Road at the junction with Widemarsh Street were out of action for at least an hour.

One local driver said: “It was really tricking trying to cross as you could not tell who had the right of way and whether there were any cars coming.”

Despite the road opening in December 2017, the council is not yet responsible for the traffic lights.

A Herefordshire Council spokesperson said: “Following the introduction of traffic lights, there is a period of time during which the installer continues to maintain the lights to ensure there are no operational issues before they are adopted by the local authority.

“We are still within this period and so the council does not currently operate these traffic lights. The operator is aware and is working to rectify the problem.”
