ON the last day of term before Christmas, Fairfield High School held a Christmas jumper day for charity.

This year the school wanted to support a local charity or initiative, so instead of money, organisers asked the children to bring in one or more items that could be donated to the food bank in Hereford.

The suggestion was dried and tinned goods, but also toiletries, sanitary protection and so on.

The students and staff rose to the occasion and they had well over 1000 items donated - an average of more than two per student.

Head teacher, Sue Gaston said, "It really made them think about how important it is to help everyone in the community at times when they need it and not to take anything for granted.

"When we approached Hereford Food Bank they had just been given some very large donations so had no storage space!

"So we gave some straightaway to the Open Door charity that works with the homeless at Christmas and stored the rest until today, when our site manager delivered a huge number of boxes to the Hereford Food Bank, just at the right time to replenish their stock after Christmas".
